With today being the 20th anniversary of the final ever episode of WCW Nitro – which feels absolutely insane even to just type those words – there now comes word that WWE has recently filed to trademark the ‘WCW’ name.
As per Heel by Nature, Vince McMahon’s sports entertainment juggernaut applied to trademark the term ‘WCW’ with the United States Patent and Trademark Office earlier this week on 22 March.
Having purchased World Championship Wrestling in 2001, WWE already owns numerous WCW-based trademarks for various different classifications. Where this new trademark filing is concerned, it’s being made for merchandising purposes.
Specifically, the application itself mentions toys and action figures, board games, electronic and tabletop games, playing cards, stuffed and plush toys, foam hands, novelty masks, Christmas tree decorations and knee and elbow pads.
All of this means that, should WWE be successful in their application – and let’s face it, that seems highly likely given how they own the WCW IP – that there’s a good chance that plentiful new pieces of WCW merch will be made available later in this year and beyond.
