Trump says he will ban Chinese-owned app TikTok from US

The United States will ban the popular social media app TikTok, President Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday.

“As far as TikTok is the concerned, we’re banning them from the United States,” Trump said according to a White House pool report.

The president suggested he would be able to use emergency economic powers or an executive order to enforce a ban of the app..

“Well, I have that authority. I can do it with an executive order or that,” Trump said.

Trump told reporters who were traveling with him Friday from Tampa to Washington, D.C., that he planned to take action on the app as soon as Saturday.

TikTok, a Chinese-owned app that allows users to share short-form videos, has been scrutinized by the State Department and federal officials over possible cybersecurity concerns. The move to ban the app comes as tensions between the U.S. and China have escalated since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
