Hero cop who drowned trying to save a tourist, 24, who was sucked into a whirlpool in a canyon is mourned at a funeral procession through her home town

A hero police officer who died as she tried to pull a young canyoner from a raging river has been farewelled with a full police funeral.

Senior Constable Kelly Foster, 39, drowned when an international student was sucked into a whirlpool at the Wollangambe Canyon, on Mount Wilson, north-west of Sydney, on January 2.

Eyewitnesses told police she was caught up when attempting to rescue another canyoner from a whirlpool at Mount Wilson.

The international student also died.

Snr Cst Foster’s family, friends and colleagues gathered at Lithgow Uniting Church for her funeral on Thursday afternoon.

Fellow police officers carried her coffin, which was draped with an Australian flag, into the church.

To allow members of the public to pay their respects, a funeral procession and marching escort then travelled along one of the town’s main roads.

Snr Cst Foster had served in the police force since 2010 and was highly regarded. She was first stationed in Newtown in Sydney’s inner west and most recently worked at Lithgow Police Station.
