Actress turned politician Jaya Bachchan needs no introduction. She was one of the leading actresses of her time and has ruled the silver screen for many years. Today, the veteran actress has turned a year older today and is celebrating her 72nd birthday with her loved ones. Keeping in view the ongoing pandemic, this year, her birthday celebrations will be a low-key affair owing to several restrictions imposed due to Coronavirus. However, Jaya will ring in her special day with her family.

Jaya, who is also a Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha from the Samajwadi Party, was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1992 for her contribution to Hindi cinema. 1. Zanjeer

Directed by Prakash Mehra, Zanjeer, starring Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan was released in 1973 and was a blockbuster. In the film, Big B played the role of a cop and the actress was seen playing a role of a nomadic woman. The movie showed the crackling chemistry of Jaya and Amitabh. It’s said that real-life love blossomed on the sets between the two stars and soon, they got married. 

2. Abhiman 

The movie, which was reportedly said to be based on the troubled marriage between classical musicians Pandit Ravi Sankar and his wife Annapurna Devi, was released in 1973 and became a blockbuster film of that year. The emotional drama narrated the story of a man who persuades his wife to start a career in singing. However, their marriage faces differences when Uma’s (played by Jaya) popularity surpasses his own. Both the stars have given the finest performance as a pair in the film.

3. Mili

Released in 1975, the movie garnered huge applause from the critics. The film revolves around, Shekhar, a misanthropic man, played by Amitabh, who falls in love with his cheerful neighbour, Mili (Jaya Bachchan). The movie showed the protagonist’s unconditional love for Mili, who was suffering from cancer. Jaya and Amitabh’s terrific performance as lovers had made the film evergreen.

4. Sholay 

Ramesh Sippy’s 1975 directorial Sholay is one of the most evergreen films. Besides, Jai-Veeru’s friendship, action sequences, and dialogues, the film was also loved for Jaya and Amitabh’s cute chemistry. 

5. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

Karan Johar’s directorial was released in 2001 and had an ensemble cast starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan, and Kareena Kapoor. The film depicted the story of an Indian family, who initially refuses to accept the adopted son’s marriage to a girl belonging to a lower socio-economic group than them. Jaya and Amitabh were seen together on the silver screen after many years and their sweet chemistry was indeed the treat for their fans.
