Chris Jericho recalls Vince McMahon willing to fight “midget” Frank Shamrock, Mickey Rourke being worried about a double cross at WrestleMania 25

This week on Chris Jericho’s “Talk Is Jericho” podcast, Court Bauer was on to talk about MLW and his time as a writer in WWE. There were tons of WWE stories told on this podcast, including the one about Mikey Rourke when he was involved in WWE storylines during the build for WrestleMania 25.

Here is what was said about what was going on behind-the-scenes with Rourke:

Jericho talked about the infamous segment with Mikey Rourke on Larry King Live: “I went and did the Larry King Show and Vince said see, if you can cajole him into being in the match. Be stiff on him and see if we can convince him to do it. I was a real ass**le on the show. I called him a coward and was really running him through the ranks. You could see the steam blasting through his ears. He was not happy about it which I didn’t think he took seriously. So, I showed up in Houston and he was there the night before to go over what we were going to be doing.”

Court Bauer continued the story: “I heard the story after it all went down. I was working with Frank Shamrock on a project for Showtime. We were talking about our connections with wrestling. If you watch that WrestleMania, you will see Frank Shamrock next to Mickey Rourke which some people may have thought something was going to happen with Frank and Jericho. What Frank told me was Mickey was very concerned that there was going to be a double cross. He was concerned that you (Jericho) and Vince and WWE was going to do something and somehow take advantage of him and put him in a position to humiliate him publicly. He called up Frank and said, ‘I want you to come to WrestleMania. I will pay for everything. I want you to sit next to me to make sure nothing happens.’  Frank said, ‘I don’t think anything is going to happen but if you want me to go with you, I will be happy to do it.’ Mickey said, ‘If anything goes down, I’m going to give you the sign and you just have to take care of things.’

Jericho continued: “When I showed up the night before the show, he (Rourke) was standing in the ring with Frank Shamrock. He had this other guy that was like a bounty hunter or a mercenary and they were all UFC fighters. There were three of them and they were there to protect him in case there was a double cross and all he was doing was getting in at the end of the match and knocking me out. When I was walking to the ring because it was a stadium and it was a really long rampway. One of our people came up to me and said, /Mickey is there and he is really pissed off at you.’  I said, ‘Why?’  He said, ‘Because he thinks what you said on Larry King was real.’  I said, ‘Did you tell him it wasn’t’ and he said, ‘No.’  I went in the ring and it was the first time I met him face to face and it was a fake Hollywood hug. It took me a while to explain to him that what I said on Larry King was in character to build up the match.

He said, ‘No, that’s not how it works. In boxing, if you say that to somebody, that’s a fight.’ I said to him, ‘Mickey, you are up for an Oscar for a movie in which you play a wrestler. You know how this is.’ Finally, after talking to him for a good five or 10 minutes, he finally got it. He actually said, ‘I can’t believe I’m up for an Oscar and you out-acted me. You fooled me.’ Then he told me that all those guys were there to attack me if there was any kind of double cross. I told him, ‘I’m not Goldberg. If there is going to be a double-cross, you don’t need four guys to take me out.’ Here is the best part. Vince is down there. We are going over the punch at the end and finally, when Mickey leaves at the end with his entourage, I say to Vince that he brought these guys here to attack me in case there was a fight. Vince said, ‘Those guys?’ He pointed to Shamrock and said, ‘He’s a midget. What’s that midget going to do? Me, you Finlay and Malenko will kick their asses.’ I said, ‘Well let me tell you this Vince. If something breaks out, I’ll take Mickey Rourke and you take the midget.’ He said, ‘You’re damn right I will.’
