Awkwafina and Sandra Oh set to play sisters in upcoming comedy film for Netflix

Awkwafina and Sandra Oh are teaming-up to star as sisters in a still-untitled new comedy film for Netflix.  

The story focuses on a lonely recluse, played by Oh, whose life is upended when her train wreck sister, Awkwafina, vows to mend their relationship by helping her fulfill a lifelong dream of being a contestant on her favorite game show, according to Variety.    

Jen D’Angelo, writer for the upcoming Disney+ sequel Hocus Pocus whose credits include Solar Opposites, Cougar Town  and Workaholics, will pen the script and produce.

Netflix confirmed the news on Twitter on Thursday, October 29.

‘Awkwafina & Sandra Oh in a comedy together? Literally a dream come true,’ the tweet said along with the brief synopsis of the story and pictures of the two acclaimed actresses posing together. 

Oh, who’s an Ontario, Canada native, was quick to reaffirm the news to her Twitter followers by writing: ‘Yep, it’s in the works.’

While Awkwafina took to her Instagram page and posted: ‘So excited for this @iamsandraohinsta @netflix @gloriasanchezprods,’ along with prayer and flame emojis.

Most recently, Oh has starred in the British spy thriller series Killing Eve (2018-present) for three seasons.

Her performance and work behind-the-scenes on Killing Eve landed her a Golden Globe for Best Actress – Television Series Drama and five Primetime Emmy Award nominations as both as an actor and co-executive producer.

Previously, The 49-year-old actress was best known for her role on Grey’s Anatomy (2005-2014), which garnered her a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Television Film and five Primetime Emmy Award nominations.

Awakwafina (born Nora Lum), 32, is coming off her Golden Globe-winning role in the comedy-drama film The Farewell, and the first season o Comedy Central series Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens.

The New York Native also stars in the upcoming comedy-drama film Breaking News In Yuba County that’s set to premiere on January 29, 2021, and the superhero film Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings that drops on July 9, 2021.

She is also voicing the role of Scuttle in the upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
