Amber Heard beams while horseback riding in LA

Amber Heard was spotted beaming while horseback riding in Los Angeles, as she prepares to learn if her ex-husband Johnny Depp won a libel suit against a newspaper that claimed he was a ‘wife-beater’ during their chaotic marriage.

The 34-year-old actress seemed in high spirits during her two-hour riding session at a local stable on Wednesday afternoon.

She flashed wide smiles and pulled some funny faces during the activity, seemingly putting out of her mind the upcoming verdict in Depp’s libel case against UK newspaper The Sun.

Heard had traveled to England in July to give evidence against her 52-year-old ex-husband during a high-profile, three-week hearing at London’s High Court.

The extraordinary case laid bare their tempestuous private lives as the court was told of allegations of serious domestic abuse, drug taking and affairs.

The judgement in the ‘Depp v News Group Newspapers Ltd’ case will be published online at 10am on Monday and there will be no hearing at court.

On Wednesday, Heard appeared relaxed as she galloped on a chestnut-colored horse around a riding arena.

She had her shoulder-length blonde hair pulled back in two French braids, and dressed in a black T-shirt, black pants and riding boots, with a white banana tied around her neck.

Depp and Heard met on the set of The Rum Diary back in 2011 and married four years later before their May 2016 fight proved the final nail in their chaotic relationship.

The estranged couple managed to agree to a $7 million divorce settlement in August of that year, however their feud reignited when Heard’s op-ed was published in December 2018.

It didn’t mention Depp by name but he nonetheless sued her the following March, saying it led to speculation that he was the abuser and caused him to lose the role of Captain Jack Sparrow.

Depp claimed her op-ed implicated him as the abuser, damaging his reputation and causing him to lose his prized role of Captain Jack Sparrow.

Depp has argued he was the victim of an ‘elaborate hoax’ instigated by his ex-wife, who ‘faked’ her injuries with makeup and falsified accounts of abuse.

‘Ms. Heard is not a victim of domestic abuse; she is the perpetrator,’ his suit alleges.

‘She hit, punched and kicked me. She also repeatedly and frequently threw objects into my body and head, including heavy bottles, soda cans, burning candles, television remote controls and paint thinner cans, which severely injured me.’

Heard responded with a 300-page filing of her own, cataloging the years of alleged abuse she suffered at the hands of ‘the monster’ and recalling many of the allegations she made during their divorce.

These included a blood-curdling account of how Depp cut off his own finger after a booze and ecstasy bender one month into their marriage, an accusation he denies.

The court heard evidence over 16 days from both stars, friends and relatives of the couple and several former and current employees.

Depp spent around 20 hours in the witness box over five days, facing intense questioning about his Hollywood lifestyle, his use of drink and drugs, allegations of violence and his friendships and associations with famous faces including Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and musician Sir Elton John.

In closing arguments, the actor’s barrister David Sherborne said Depp’s case was about vindication.

He said: ‘What is important to Mr Depp is clearing his name of these appalling allegations, expanded on as it has been over the last four years, as a result of which he has lost nothing less than everything, he would say.

‘When I say he has lost everything, to him obviously everything is his reputation. This is not about money, this is vindicating him.’

The judge has to decide whether the Sun article caused ‘serious harm’ to Depp’s reputation and whether the allegations made by the paper were substantially true.

If Depp wins, his lawyers have argued he would be ‘entitled to very substantial damages as only a substantial award can start to compensate him for the damage and distress the defendants’ appalling allegations have had and ‘nail the lie’.’

They said in practice there was a ceiling on general damages of between £300,000 and £325,000 ($391,000 to $423,600) but argued Depp should also receive aggravated damages, saying the Sun’s response to his claim had added to the ‘harm, distress and need for vindication’.

If he loses, his reputation will be severely damaged and he may struggle to land major film parts in future, commentators said.
